Warwickshire supports somewhere in the region of 20,000 species of animal and plant. Some are faring well, some are scarce and vulnerable, and may have disappeared entirely, including 14 sorts of butterfly, 5 sorts of bumblebee, 200 types of flower, animals such as the red squirrel and several birds.
The Museum, in conjunction with other local naturalists and organisations such as Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, English Nature, Farming and Wildlife advisory group and the Warwickshire Conservation Volunteers makes a great effort to protect and enhance the current 'biodiversity' (variety of life) in the area.
We maintain the Warwickshire Biological Record Centre, storing information on thousands of species and sites. Ecologists in our Field Ecological Unit check planning applications and provide advice to landowners, developers and planning officers. We also assist in the management of important projects such as the Habitat Biodiversity Audit, the Warwickshire Wildlife Sites Project, and the Warwickshire Biodiversity Action Plan. |
