Heritage Motor Museum at Gaydon

Top marks for the County’s museums

Ten museums in Warwickshire have been given an award for excellence by the government's agency for museums, galleries, libraries and archives; the MLA.

See further down the page for a list of all 10 winning museums in the county.

All underwent vigorous scrutiny into how well they look after historic collections on the publics’ behalf, how they look after visitors and how well they are managed.

Two museums were given extra commendations; Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery for their forward planning, and the Heritage Motor Museum at Gaydon for the management of their vehicle and archive collections.

‘Through the keyhole’

Not content to celebrate their awards with a glass of bubbly, the ten museums have decided to throw open their doors and allow lucky members of the public to see just what does go on when the museum is closed.

Throughout August and September 2008 the public are invited to visit one of the museums and enter a competition to spend a special day behind the scenes at a museum of their choice.

The competition winners will get full VIP treatment spending a day with a curator in the places not normally seen by the public, exploring some of the hidden treasures, hearing some of the secret stories behind the objects and getting to know what really goes on through the museum keyhole.

The competition is free to enter and features a category for adults and one for children.
