Blue Arrow Offers

1. What help could you offer in tackling climate change in Warwickshire?

2. We have been asked to circulate the following positions.

There is Defra funding available for a team to look at the human health impacts of climate change in the region. Any interested candidates should email Paul Fisher a CV on the contact details below.

The project team will have its own dedicated office at the West Midlands Public Health Observatory and will be overseen by Dr John Kemm as project manager. The project will run from 1st October 2009 till the 31st March 2010. There will be three members of the team:
1. A paid post. We have £18,000 for the 6 months (this would be inclusive of all taxes, expenses etc). The exact role would depend on the nature of the successful candidate but we would see this person being the main author of the final report, project managing on a day-to-day basis and leading on the environmental/climate change input to the report. This post would be expected to have a suitable postgraduate qualification and work experience in the environmental field;
2. An SpT/SpR – a number of trainees on the Public Health Training Scheme have already shown an interest. This will either be one for 6 months for two for 3 months each. Their main input will be on the health side and particularly liaising with HPA experts; and
3. An EU researcher - there will be two for 3 months each. The first researcher, Lorenza, has already been chosen. She has a background in Environmental Biochemistry, so should prove a valuable asset to the team.

The main output of the project will be a report outlining the potential human health impacts of climate change in the West Midlands Region. I am finalising an MPH project on the climate change effects on daily mean temperature and the consequent changes in crude daily mortality for the region and this team’s report will expand this work to cover the wider impacts on human health.

The project steering group have already identified a number of organisations, individuals and groups with an interest in health and climate change. Many of these have already shown a keen interest in this work and it will be vital that external local, regional and national resources are maximised to ensure a robust product is produced and wider ownership gained.

This is an extremely interesting area to work in and this project could play a large part in shaping regional health and climate change activity (for example: estimation of impacts, setting of indicators, producing models and surveillance systems).
