Overview:

Rocheberie Schoolhouse Quilters (RSQ) was founded in April 2001 and has grown to over 50 members. Their objective is to provide a meeting place for quilters to share in the craft of patchwork and quilting at all skill levels through a variety of techniques. Quilting has historically had a strong link with communities coming together to create beautiful works of art and they provide that opportunity in the modern world.

Meetings:

RSQ currently meets 4 times a year but this will be increasing to 6 times a year in 2007. Anyone interested in learning patchwork may go along. They have members with expertise in all areas of patchwork and quilting who would be more than happy to share their knowledge. The cost for the day is £4 and that includes tea and coffee. Meetings are held on a Saturday at The Crescent School on Bawnmore Road in Rugby, Warwickshire CV22 7QH.

The meetings are full of inspiration, learning and laughter. A typical meeting includes a programme of sit and sew, demonstration tables, a sales table, a trader, an afternoon speaker, show and tell and a raffle. Doors open at 9:45 am and the day usually finishes at around 3:30 pm.

The committee is drawn from the members, who are responsible for organizing each meeting which includes inviting the speaker, the trader, organizing the raffle and the tea and coffee. Their current committee is made up Laura Cox, Muriel Goldschmidt, Chris MacLean, Lynda Hill, Jane Weston, Gaynor Sandercock, June Farmer, and Tina Marriott.

Rocheberie Quilters bring speakers in from around the country which are renowned for their work. At every meeting members have a chance to hear about and see the beautiful works of art from these talented quilters. Also they bring in a trader giving members a chance to shop for supplies.

For more fun, each year the members have an opportunity to participate in group projects. Sometimes this has been in the form of block swaps or mystery quilts or in this year’s case, a row robin, whereby a quilt is made by several people. Each person starts with a row and then it is given to the next quilter in the group who adds a bit more. This continues until the exchange is complete and each quilter has back their original piece of work with the additions from others.

Another ongoing project is RSQ's commitment to support Project Linus (www.projectlinusuk.net). Project Linus is a non-profit organization that collects new, homemade, washable quilts for children who for one reason or another are in need of a ‘security blanket’. All quilts stay in the UK and go to hospitals, children’s homes, and battered wives refuges etc. Project Linus was started in the UK in 2000 and so far has donated 52,020 blankets across the country.
