The Chinese New Year

"Sun Nin Fy Lok!"

Chinese New Year falls on 7 February this year, but the celebrations will go on for a further 15 days. Days before New Year, every family is busy giving the house a thorough cleaning, hoping to sweep away all the ill-fortune there may have been to make way for the incoming good luck. The Eve of the New Year is very carefully observed. Everyone comes together for supper, which is a feast. Fifteen days later comes the
Festival of Lanterns, an occasion for shows and folk dances.

Tuesday 5 February is Shrove Tuesday which is also called Pancake Day. Traditionally this day is used to use up all the food that could not be eaten before Lent.


February 8 is Nirvana Day which is an annual Buddhist festival. It is also known as Parinirvana and is celebrated by some Buddhists on February 15th.
