Youth Justice Service

The Youth Justice Service (formerly the Youth Offending Service) works with young people aged between 10 and 17 years who have offended or are likely to do so.

The Warwickshire Youth Justice Service is a multi-disciplinary team which works in partnership with other teams and agencies and includes workers from:
    • Social Care
    • Probation
    • Police
    • Education and ConneXions
    • Health
The Youth Offending Service was formed in 1999 in response to the Crime and Disorder Act 1998. Every local authority has, by law, to bring together people from key agencies to help prevent offending and work with young people.

The change in service name to Youth Justice Service highlights the service's work with parents, victims of crime as well as work to prevent young people offending.

It supports the six key objectives of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 by making sure that:
    • The time from arrest to sentence is short;
    • Young people understand the consequences of their behaviour;
    • Work is provided which looks at the causes of young people's misbehaviour and offending;
    • Any punishment relates to the seriousness and persistence of offending;
    • Young offenders work with their victims or the community;
    • Parents are aware of their responsibility.

In November 2010 Warwickshire Youth Justice Service won the national Communicating Youth Justice Award, an award for making the public aware of the work the service has undertaken with young people and with victims.
