Air Quality & Transport - North Warwickshire Borough

A declared AQMA for Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) at Coleshill in North Warwickshire has been in place since March 2001, and relates to one residential property (receptor) adjacent to Junction 4 of the M6 where it intersects with the A446 and the M42. The AQMA is bounded by Stonebridge Road, Coleshill Heath Road, the M42 and the M6, and relates directly to traffic on these motorways.
The AQMA was originally declared for a marginal exceedance of the NO2 objective.

Following the declaration of the AQMA, an AQAP was prepared by the Borough Council in conjunction with the Highways Agency. Continual monitoring has been undertaken to ascertain a timescale for the possible revocation of the AQMA, given the potential impact of the M6 Toll on traffic flows along this section of the M6. Monitoring of air quality at the site suggests that acceptable levels of NO
2 may be met by 2010 and the AQMA revoked by continuation of present measures and trends.

Following its downgrading from a trunk road in January 2008, the A446 is now the responsibility of the County Council. Notwithstanding, the principal responsibility for addressing the AQMA remains with the Highways Agency, given the predominant cause of the NO
2 exceedance.
