School Travel Plans

A school travel plan is a document that sets out a number of practical steps to reduce solo car use and improve children's safety, health and environment.

A travel plan will:
  • be a whole school initiative which involves children, staff, parents, governors and the wider community.
  • aim to enable parents and children to choose walking, cycling and public transport with confidence to help reduce congestion at the school gate.
  • address health, safety, environment, education and other social issues.
  • have clear aims and objectives and targets which can be measured.
Write a School Travel Plan and receive a Department for Children, Schools and Families grant:
  • £3750 + £5 per pupil for primary schools
  • £5,000 + £5 per pupil for secondary and special schools

Why do we need a School Travel Plan?

In urban areas in term time nearly 1 in 4 cars at 8.45am is on the school run.

Over the past 20 years the proportion of children travelling to school by car has almost doubled, yet many live close enough to school to walk.

For some there is no alternative but to travel by car, but many children are being driven short distances when they could easily walk or cycle.

Why has there been an increase in car journeys to school?
  • Parents' concerns about road traffic danger
  • Parents' fears for child's safety if travelling unaccompanied
  • The school journey forming part of the journey to work
  • Wider catchment areas of schools and decline in rural public transport
What are the effects of car dependence?
  • Increase in peak period traffic congestion
  • Increase in pollution around schools
  • Fewer opportunities for children to develop road safety skills
  • Lack of exercise and related health problems
In the UK, over 1 in 5 boys and 1 in 4 girls are now classed as overweight or obese.
