Winter Weather Advice and Information

This page will be updated as and when winter weather is encountered in Warwickshire.

General Information

Volunteers Need - 4x4 Drivers

We are asking if anyone with a four wheel drive is willing to offer some time across Christmas and New Year including Christmas Day and Boxing Day to assist our Adult Social Care staff. We are asking for support throughout the day but the main times are for shift changes at 7 am, 2 pm and 10pm.

If you are willing to offer your time or can help, please contact Adult, Health and Community Services on (01926) 742950.

School Closures

Regularly updated information is available at: Latest school transport (School Links) information

Roads - Gritting and Driving

Please be aware that during winter weather, extreme care should be taken even when roads have been gritted as even this will not ensure that they are entirely free of ice. Schools
Schools are only gritted if they are already on the agreed gritting routes.

Adding new roads
To have a road added to the gritting route and application should be made in writing to the area office and it will have to show some connectivity to the existing route.

Safe driving

Please ensure that your car's windows, number plates and lights are clear of snow before starting your journey. Please also ensure you clear snow from the roof of your car, as this could be a hazard to drivers behind you.

Potholes and road faults
We appreciate you reporting any serious potholes which could pose a safety hazard to cyclists, motorcyclists and car users during times of severe winter weather, and all year around.

It is the larger potholes, typically bigger than a dinner plate and greater than 50mm deep, that we will prioritise to fix when temperatures are above freezing. We have a large highway network of more than 3820km so we will tackle the problem in a systematic manner across the county. Useful Links

Grit Bins

Warwickshire County Council is responsible for ensuring the roads are gritted but does not provide grit bins.

Rural Areas
Parish Councils can provide grit bins in locations which have been agreed with the County Council as highway authority and the County Council will replenish these as and when resources are available after the primary routes have been gritted.

Urban Areas
Similarly in urban areas Residents Associations and Town Councils have provided grit bins which the County Council will replenish.

Private Purchase
Members of the public can purchase grit bins but must get permission from the County Council as highway authority for their location.

What about replenishing these?
The location of bins is strictly controlled and they tend to be authorised on estate roads, mainly cul-de-sacs, where drivers have no other way of exiting the road, which are away from precautionary gritted routes and have a steep incline.
