    Variable Tuition Fees and Tuition Fee Loan

    From September 2006 onwards, Universities and Colleges offering Higher Education courses in the United Kingdom can charge a varying amount of tuition fees.

    You will not be required to pay tuition fees before you start your course or while you are studying, although you can do so if you wish. You can apply for a non income assessed tuition fee loan to cover the amount of tuition fees charged by your university or college. This will give you the advantage of not having to find this money from elsewhere. If you decide to take out the tuition fee loan, the fees will be paid directly to the institution, and you would repay the loan in the same way as you would repay the maintenance loan (the April after you graduate and once you earn £15,000). For further details about repaying the loan can be found on the Student Loans Company website. Click here to go straight to the website.

    The maximum amount of tuition that can be charged is:

    2007/2008 academic year - up to £3,070

    2008/2009 academic year - up to £3,145

    Maintenance Grant

    From 2006, new full time students from lower income households will be eligible to receive a (non repayable) maintenance grant

    The amount of grant available is dependent on household income

    The maximum maintenance grant available is £2,765

    Household Income of less than £17,910; student will receive full grant

    Household Income of more than £38,331; student will not receive any grant

    For the 2008/2009 academic year:

    The maximum maintenance grant available is £2,835

    If a student receives any of the maintenance grant up to a maximum of £1,200, that amount is deducted from the amount of maintenance loan available.

    • you have childcare costs to meet;
    • you are under 21 and have been in care since you were 16.
