Welcome to Warwickshire County Council

Regeneration
Rugby Town Centre

Rugby is well know across the world as the birthplace of the game of rugby football. The game of rugby began on the Close at Rugby School in 1823 when William Webb Ellis first took the ball in his arm and ran with it.

The famous Rugby school, as well as being the focus for Matthew Arnold’s classic novel, Tom Brown’s School days, was also attended by other great literary figures such as Rupert Brooke and Lewis Carroll.

Rugby lies on the eastern edge of the West Midlands region and is today an important regional centre. With an expanding population of 90,000, the town centre will need to respond to growth over the next few years, particularly with its infrastructure, services and shopping offer.

Warwickshire County Council is working with Rugby Borough Council and Rugby First in the development of a Core Strategy that will aim to address the town’s expansion and development needs over the coming years, as well as a transport strategy for the town.

The same partners are also looking at the feasibility of establishing a World of Rugby Visitor attraction in the heart of the town, which will complement and enhance the existing visitor experience.

The Railway station has undergone a £170M refit and brings London to a journey time of about fifty minutes. To the north of the railway line lies a 100 acre site which will be subject to mixed use development including a new state of the art college majoring in sustainable power engineering together with some 800 new houses.

Rugby was the first town in Warwickshire to vote in a Business Improvement District (BID).
