Grand Union Canal - The Grand Union Canal stretches into the distance.

The waterway stretches for 217km (135 miles) and has 160 locks. Stretching between the two largest cities in England, London and Birmingham, the present Grand Union Canal only came into being in 1929 after a series of separate canals were amalgamated. This was in response to competition from improvements in vehicle technology and the development of new roads. These were seen as a threat to the canals.

The Grand Union Canal travels through Warwickshire by coming in from the south by Braunston Junction, which is just over the border in Northamptonshire by Daventry, before intersecting the Oxford Canal which connects Coventry to Oxford. It then heads west through Long Itchington, Leamington Spa and Warwick up to Lapworth, where it connects with the Stratford Canal (connecting Stratford with the Worcester and Birmingham Canal at Kings Norton Junction). The canal then finishes its last stretch by travelling out of Warwickshire through Solihull and into Birmingham.

The below picture is of the 3-mile (5-km) stretch that leads to the four Bascote locks between Long Itchington and Southam.
