Towns of Warwickshire - Lapworth

Lapworth village lies in the Birmingham green belt and on the junction of two canals, the Stratford Canal and the Grand Union Canal.

The village is strongly associated with the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, as the charismatic leader of the plotters, Robert Catesby, was born and lived here. His tomb is in Lapworth Church.

There is a lane in Lapworth called Catesby Lane, named after William Catesby (the father of Robert Catesby of Gunpowder Plot fame), whose family had been settled at Bushwood Hall in the parish since about 1480. The manor house was probably at Lapworth Hall, today Ireland's Farm, and in the 17th and 18th centuries the house of the Mander family of Wolverhampton.

Places of interest

There are two National Trust properties close to Lapworth, the historic houses of Baddesley Clinton and Packwood House.

Another fine house, Wroxall Abbey, country seat of Sir Christopher Wren also lies close, as well as the peaceful tranquility of Hay Wood, owned by the Foresty Commission.

Lapworth is a popular area for cuisine and has many 'gastro-pubs' including The Boot Inn at Lapworth, The Navigation Inn, The Punch Bowl and further afield the Fleur-de-Lys at Lowonsford.

There is a 7 mile stile free walk that takes in the best features of the surrounding countryside. See the Train and Trek pages for more details.
