WCC Projects
The projects below were funded through the 2000-2006 Objective 2 programme. Some projects are running until the end of 2008.
Abbey Green Local Centre
Abbey Green Local Centre in Nuneaton was awarded more than £72,000 to support environmental improvements and pedestrian/ cycle links to complement the £740,000 provided by the County Council .
Bayton Road, Industrial Estate, Bedworth
This project secured funding of over £1.2m from the European Union and Advantage West Midlands to revitalise one of the largest industrial estates in the County. This will be achieved via a range of activities, including the creation of a resource centre which will provide a state of the art IT training facility, and meeting rooms to enable businesses on the estate to access training, business advice and information services.
Other activities will focus on both physical and environmental improvements and cover items such as, direction signing within the estate, street lighting upgrades, estate entrance improvements, planting selected locations, forecourt building frontages improvements. The estate comprises of over 200 businesses who collectively employ over 3500 people, and this project will aim to maintain and improve the Industrial estates ability to sustain this level of economic activity.
Building Sustainable Neighbourhoods
£620,000 of Objective 2 funding helped to widen the participation of excluded people in the regeneration of their neighbourhoods in Camp Hill and parts of Bedworth. A dedicated team has been recruited and the programme is also supported by AWM Regeneration Zone funding.
There are four main elements to the project:
- Dedicated neighbourhood co-ordinators will train and manage new 'neighbourhood forums'. They will work with locally based training and service providers to better deliver services locally.
- Improving the network of outreach facilities to enhance access to opportunities.
- Developing under-used facilities to create cohesion and to enable social inclusion of all members of the community. These facilities will provide a focus for learning and training - including ICT and the internet.
- Creating alternative employment in the social economy sector via locally created activities eg.linked to ICT, craft and childcare initiatives - ensuring these become sustainable by and for the community.
For more information, see the BSN web site.
Camp Hill Opportunities Centre, Nuneaton
This project is a community resource designed to improve the community cohesion and the regeneration of the surrounding area. The centre will deliver a number of services and training opportunities to the residents of the Regeneration Zone to improve their economic prospects and the quality of life.
The centre offers vocational training in the areas of Construction, Information Technology, and motor scooter riding. The project secured over £550,000 from a variety of sources including Advantage West Midlands, Single Regeneration Budget, the European Union and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

Eliot Park Innovation Centre (EPIC), Nuneaton
EPIC provides flexible, modern accommodation for innovative start up and existing small to medium sized enterprises who can demonstrate their potential for growth. On site managment and business support services are provided by Coventry University Enterprises.
The building is one of the most technologically advanced and environmentally friendly in the region, incorporating the ‘thermodeck’ construction system, and a ‘photovoltaic panel system’ which will generate electricity from daylight.
The project secured funding over £6.2m from the European Union via ERDF, Advantage West Midlands and the DTI.
For further information see their website.
Midland Quarry
This project involves the site clearance, infilling and infrastructure provision to create a development platform of 2.45ha, on land that is presently occupied by quarry waste. It will involve the construction of a new road linking in to the B4144, internal service roads and a new highway link in to the existing Pool Road Industrial Estate. In addition the project will involve the construction of approximately 58,000 sq.ft of B1 floor space. This project has secured funding from the European Union and Advantage West Midlands of more than £2.5m in total.
Nuneaton & Bedworth Town Centres
Nuneaton and Bedworth have been awarded more than £1.1 million of European funding. Together with the £180,000 being sought from Advantage West Midlands, this money will enable improvements to take place to the streets, shop fronts and pedestrian areas and to develop Town Centre Management publicity, tourist information and business support. The project is also looking ahead to the potential for development of the 'eastern sector' and fits into the long-term development plan for the towns. A master plan has been developed by Arup (consultants) on behalf of WCC and NBBC, to provide a vision and a planning structure for town centre development over the next ten to twenty years. The master plan will provide the basis for further funding applications to a variety of funding bodies including the Councils themselves, AWM, Objective 3 through co-financing, English Hertitage, Lottery funds, and English Partnerships.
