Switch It Off

Background to the Campaign

Switch It Off is an energy saving campaign covering Warwickshire, Coventry and Worcestershire, designed to show the electrical savings that can be achieved when a lot of people turn off unwanted lights and electrical appliances left on standby.

If the 1.5 million people in the area stopped leaving appliances on standby in their homes, in one year it would save more than £23 million pounds and prevent over 86,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere.

The campaign begun during 2006 and was a great success with a reduction of 64MW electricity consumption achieved across all three regions during the Big Switch Off. The campaign has continued to be a success with every year achieving a greater reduction.

A measure of the campaign's success is that the 2006 campaign was shortlisted in the Communications Category of the Energy Institute Awards 2007, came runner-up in Sustainable Development UK Awards 2008 and was shortlisted for the Sustainable Cities Award organised by the City of London. The 2007 campaign won the Communications Award in the Energy Institute Awards 2008.
