Chesterton Windmill - Chesterton Windmill looking into the setting sun

Chesterton Windmill was built in 1632 for Sir Edward Peyto, the owner of Chesterton Manor, and remained in working use right up until 1910. It was Restored between 1965 and 1971 by Warwickshire County Council.

It may have been designed by Inigo Jones, or possibly by Sir Edward Payto himself as there is conflicting evidence. It also isn't certain whether it was originally designed as a windmill, or originally intended as a viewing point. There is also the idea that it was to be used as an observatory. This would certainly make sense as it stands high ontop of a hill with perfect views of the surrounding area and night sky.

Visitors can climb up steep wooden stairs into the building. There are two floors inside the windmill. On the lower floor are the mill wheels which grind the corn into flour.

Chesterton Windmilll is occasionally opened to the public (usually for one weekend a year during either the 2nd or 3rd week of September). For further details please contact Malcolm Murphy, tel: 01926 336239, email: info@oncentre.co.uk.

For further details on this windmill see the Chesterton Windmill pages from Warwickshire County Council.
