A426 Corporation Street, Rugby - ASDA Development

Rugby Borough Council granted ASDA part of the WAL*MART family of companies, planning permission for a new supermarket off Corporation Street, Rugby, next to the Central Surgery. A condition of the permission granted calls for a new signalised traffic junction to allow access to the retail development. The scheme is being wholly funded by WAL*MART.

Access to the supermarket will be via a new signalised junction to be constructed on Corporation Street including widening the existing dual carriageway to provide a left turn lane for vehicles. Highway works are also being carried out on Drury Street and Warwick Street to improve pedestrian areas.

The works consist of widening Corporation Street, drainage, re-surfacing, street lighting, road markings and signing. The works will also involve a considerable number of underground service diversions, including electricity cables, water mains, sewers, gas mains and telecommunications apparatus.

The contract has been awarded to Wrekin Construction Limited and Phase 1 of the works commenced on the 7th January 2008 and were completed on 22nd September 2008. Phase 2 of the works will be constructed in March - June 2009.

Below are drawings indicating the scheme which have been produced by external consultants employed by ASDA. You can view an Acrobat file of the plans by clicking the following links. Work of this type will require the use of part time and full time temporary traffic signals, and as Corporation Street is one of the main roads through Rugby, delays and disruption are likely to be experienced by road users. Access to residential properties and local businesses including medical centre will be maintained at all times.

On other schemes, there have been instances of traders / contractors approaching local residents offering to tarmac drives or offer to do other work. It is not the usual procedure for the Council or its approved contractors to sell surplus material to the members of the public or carry out routine maintenance works, and anybody claiming to be from the Council and offering to carry works should be treated with extreme caution. To make a consumer complaint to our Trading Standards Department about these rogue contractors please phone 08454 04 05 06.

Should you require further information on the project please contact Chris Horn, Project Manager, Tel 01926 412677 or David Moore, Project Engineer, Tel 01926 412055.
