Recruitment Requirements
All applicants to the Fire Service must be able to fulfill the following requirements or meet the relevant criteria:-
- Be 18 years old.
- All applicants will be considered, irrespective of current or past medical conditions.
- A full medical assessment and risk assessment will be carried out to determine suitability.
- Pass selection tests, including written tests, medical examination and test of physical strength using ladders, hoses and other equipment which are essential to firefighters.
Applicants will be interviewed to see if they possess the character and personal qualities required of a firefighter.
Recruits Course
Recruit Firefighters undergo a thirteen week residential basic training course at the West Midlands Training Centre. Recruits must make satisfactory progress and pass the written, verbal and practical tests throughout the course. After training the recruit will be assigned a station to commence their probationary period.
Probationary Period
Firefighters must serve a minimum 2 years satisfactory probationary period before their appointment is confirmed.
Hours of Work
Wholetime Firefighters work 42 hours per week, over a rotating shift pattern of 2 day shifts, 2 night shifts and 4 days off duty. At each Wholetime Station there are four Watches - Red, White, Green and Blue.
Day shifts: 0900 to 1800 Night Shifts: 1800 to 0900
