Facts about Britain
- Ethnic minorities make up 7.1 % of the total population and are concentrated in the metropolitan areas.
- 50 % of these people are below the age of 12.
David Owen's analysis of the 1991 Census shows* :-
Children
- Four out of five Caribbean children have one white parent.
- In the Black-White group, 30% are under 5 years old and more than half are under the age of 10. It is a group which is growing rapidly.
- The total number of mixed race children grou by 40% in the 1980s and Owen predicts that such mixed race children will form an increasingly large percentage of the ethnic minority population.
Adults
- Based on 1991 Census figures, mixed race Britains make up only 0.5% of the total population but this figure is likely to be a serious under estimate and is expeccted to rise.
- The mixed parentage group formed 10% of the total Black and Asian population in 1991.
- Younger people are more likely to be in mixed race relationships than older people.
