Community Spaces is the £50 million Lottery-funded grant programme which was launched in the March 2008. The Community Spaces programme aims to: create better local environments; increase people’s access to quality local spaces for interaction, play and recreation; increase the number of people actively involved in developing and running a practical environmental project that is visible in their community; and improve partnerships between communities, support organisations and local authorities.
Not-for-profit community groups based in England, including church-based and faith groups, tenants and residents associations and registered charities, are eligible to apply for small grants from £10,000 to £25,000; medium grants from £25,001 to £49,999; large grants from £50,000 to £100,000; flagship grants from £100,001 to £450,000.
Projects must be within two miles of a residential area and open to the public. The types of project likely to be supported include community gardens and parks; informal sports areas and multi-use games areas; nature reserves; squares and village greens; churchyards; ponds and projects which improve the local community’s access to green space. The Small and Medium grant programmes are open to applications at any time. There will be a single application round for Large and Flagship grants which is expected to open summer 2008. For grants over £5,000 the next deadline is 15th August 2008. For grants under £5,000 there is no deadline.
Sport Relief 2006/2008
Money is being distributed within the UK through The Community Foundation Network and UnLtd.
The Sport Relief Community Foundations Network is giving grants to projects which use sport to help those who have low confidence and who are having major problems in life. Other projects will give people the chance to take part in sport when they would otherwise miss out. Up to £10,000 is available for these grants. The UnLtd Sport Relief Programme is distributing Sport Relief funds to young people who use sport to bring young people, aged 11 to 21, together in their local area to enhance community relations and reduce conflict where they live. Community Sustainable Energy Programme (CSEP)
The Community Sustainable Energy Programme , a Big Lottery fund Scheme, was launched in April 2008 to offer capital and project development grants to not-for-profit community-based organisations in England, to help reduce their energy bills and environmental impact.
Capital grants of up to £50,000 or 50% of the project cost, whichever is lower, for installing microgeneration technologies and energy efficiency measures. Matched funding can potentially be obtained from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP) which may mean that your project receives 100% funding. Eligible microgeneration technologies are:
Solar photovoltaics to provide electricity
Solar thermal for hot water
Small scale wind turbines
Ground source heat pumps/Air source heat pumps
Automated wood pellet stoves
Wood-fuelled boiler systems
Micro-hydro Turbines
Energy efficiency measures such s cavity wall and loft insulation, heating and lighting controls. Encraft is registering on this programme to provide consultancy services to guide projects through the process. Encraft is an independent engineering consultancy specializing in low carbon technologies. Breathing Places - is a BBC led initiative which aims to assist local people to create local green spaces for themselves and for wildlife. Grants up to £10,000 will assist the transformation of wasteland, woodlands, city parks, allotments or playgrounds into havens for wildlife and local communities. Rugby Borough Council Rural Development Fund - deadline fast approaching! Organisations working in the rural areas of Rugby Borough are invited to apply for grants up to £10,000 towards one off projects, purchases or improvement schemes. Rugby Borough Council Sports and Arts Grant - arts and sports activities in Rugby Borough could benefit from a grant of up to £1,000 or up to 50% of the costs of their project. Applications are considered four times a year. For further information see Rugby Borough Council website.

Funding for heritage projects – the Heritage Links Directory of Funding Sources is a free web based resource for groups with an interest in the heritage sector in areas such as: historic landscapes, parks and gardens; industrial, transport and maritime heritage; archives and spoken history; archaeology; heritage skills and conservation; and heritage interpretation and education. http://www.heritagelink.org.uk/fundingdirectory/main/fundinghome.php The website also covers historic churches and other buildings, although the built heritage is covered more fully in the sister website Funds for Historic Buildings

Parks for People – grants worth from £250,000 up to £5m
A 3-year joint initiative between Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) for the restoration and regeneration of public parks and gardens, including squares, walks and promenades in England - Project Planning Grants of up to £50,000 are also available. Match funding of 25% should be from other sources, either as cash or non-cash contributions. ("Public park” means an existing designed urban or rural green space primarily for informal recreation – including parks, gardens, squares, walks and promenades.)
Most applications are expected to be led by local authorities, application are welcome from other not-for-profit organisations that own public parks.
You can apply through this programme if:
your project is concerned with a public park;
you are a not-for-profit organisation; and
you need a grant of between £250,000 and £5 million (including development grant).
You will need to show that:
your community values the park as part of their heritage;
the parks meets local social, economic and environmental needs; and the park actively involves local people.
Applications will be assessed through a two-stage process. Decisions will be made at stage one in competitive batches twice a year. The next deadline is 30th September 2008.

Low Carbon Buildings Programme Phase 2
From 1st April 2008 organisation can apply for 50% of the total cost for the supply and instalation of any combination of approved microgeneration technologies. These include:
Solar photovoltaics

Wind turbines
Ground source heat pumps
Automated wood pellet stoves
Wood fuelled boiler systems
Who can apply?
Schools, hospitals, housing associations and trusts, libraries, universitires and colleges, registered charities, envitonmental trusts, local community groups, community amateur sports clubs, local authorities and public service organisations.
Applications are currently being accapted and it is anticiapted that funds will be committed through to mid-2009.

e-on Source Fund
To support community energy projects that either result in the reduction of energy use or result in the production of energy from a renewable source. It can provide grants up to £30,000 and is open to charities, community and not for profit organisations (including schools). They have also developed a web resource to provide access to information on renewable energy and energy efficiency for community buildings. The deadline for applications is 3 October 2008.
