Business Skills Programme for Early Years and Childcare 2009/2010

Sometimes it is easier to focus only on the day-to-day running of your business especially in the early stages. However, as your business develops it can pay dividends to think about the longer-term, more strategic planning that will enable you to become, and remain, sustainable in the highly competitive and changing childcare market place.

These three courses provide relevant, up-to-date guidance and resources to help you to develop and sustain your business.

Courses available to you:

1. Planning for Sustainability
If you face any of these issues then this session is for you:
  • Is your setting having trouble making ends meet?
  • Are you making cost-effective use of your staff?
  • Do you have problems with customers not paying bills?
  • Are you monitoring your finances properly?
We will look at

Using information effectively including registers, rotas, financial records.
Establishing how this information feeds into decisions about pricing, staffing, services, types of sales, policies and procedures and marketing.

Who is it for?
Managers, owners or voluntary management committee members who are involved in making business decisions and are concerned about your setting’s long-term sustainability.
2. Business Planning
Running any business can seem like a daunting task. You can help yourself however by having the right tools that will enable you to run a business that meets objectives and operates within the law. In addition you will gain confidence and know where to go for further help.

We will look at
  • Producing a business plan and action plan
  • The legal frameworks in which settings work
  • Signposting to resources and other support, advice and guidance
Who is it for?
The Business Planning workshop is ideal for anyone who runs a business in the voluntary, community or private sector and wants help with getting started or planning and developing the business. If you are a sole trader, partnership, limited company or voluntary managed committee this course is for you.
3. Book Keeping and Financial Awareness
This enjoyable, accessible and user-friendly introduction to the essentials of financial management for small businesses will break down some of the mystery and will give you the confidence to do it yourself or to understand what the figures mean!

We will look at
  • Recording income and expenditure (analysed cashbook)
  • Bank reconciliation
  • Dealing with petty cash
  • Monitoring the cashflow
  • Profit and loss account
  • Record keeping for tax
Who is it for?
It is ideal for people who are new to running a business and managers who are new to their role and need to have an understanding of the finances of their organisation. It will also be of interest to members of management committees who want a greater understanding of the role of the treasurer.
Note – we start from the basics, so no experience required!

Courses cost £12.00 per person which is payable as soon as you reserve your place. Confirmation of your place will be sent to you only when we have received full payment.

If you book and are then unable to attend you may nominate a colleague to take your place at no extra charge.
A cancellation charge of £30.00 will be applied (in addition to the £12.00) if:
  • We have no record of your attendance on a course
  • We do not receive notice that you are unable to attend up to 10 working days before the course commences.
Please note: Persistent non-attendance once booked on a course will result in you being unable to register for future courses.
