Towns of Warwickshire - Long Itchington

Long Itchington is a small peaceful village just north of Southam by the River Itchin from which it gets its name. The very large green sits next to the biggest village pond in Warwickshire.

Places of interest

The village features a fine 16th Century Tudor House where Elizabeth the First stayed in 1572 and 1575, at that time the home of Lady Anne Holbourne, daughter of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. The old "Manor House" in the Square dates from the 15th century.

St Wulfstan, said to have been born in Long Itchington around 1012, became Bishop of Worcester in 1062. Other notables born in the village include the journalist Tom Hilditch.

The village was once served by the former Weedon to Leamington Spa railway line. The village station was half way between Long Itchington and Southam, and was therefore known as "Southam and Long Itchington" station, but this closed to passengers in the late 1950s. Part of the old railway line has been converted into a cycleway as part of the National Cycle Network.

South of the village is a former cement works, which closed in the 1990s but still remains in place. Quarrying at the site however still continues. Opposite the old cement works is a small Model Village which was built to house the workers.
