Cycle Training
In line with Warwickshire County Council’s commitment to encourage more pupils to walk/cycle to school, safely, we provide pupils with the opportunity of undertaking cycle training.

10 years of cycle training in Warwickshire

Cycle Permit Scheme
Offered free to Secondary Schools, the aim of this scheme is, not only to encourage pupils to cycle to school, but to use safe and well maintained bicycles.

This scheme involves our instructors visiting the school and checking the bicycles of pupils wishing to participate. Owners of bikes considered to be safe, at the time of checking, receive a disc permit. Discs are valid for a year. Owners of bicycles found to have faults receive a written report.

Holiday Courses
Both the Cycle Awareness and Cycle Skills courses are provided throughout the county during school holidays in the following areas:
Nuneaton - Rugby - Leamington Spa - Stratford-upon-Avon

All schools are offered training courses, run by Warwickshire Road Safety trained instructors. If your child's school does not offer cycle training, please contact them and express your interest in the service. Cycle training can not only increase safety, but by encouraging more pupils to cycle, can help reduce congestion around schools.


Cycle Skills Course
The Cycle Skills Course is aimed at pupils aged 8 years & over consists of 2 hours of training conducted off-road, and is designed to cover the following areas:-
  • bicycle safety check
  • bicycle control
  • personal safety – helmets – clothing
  • dangers – themselves – others
Pupils who complete the course receive a certificate and can go on to take the Cycle Awareness Course when they are 9 or over in Y5 and above.


Cycle Awareness Course
This course is designed to develop road sense, awareness of traffic dangers and to improve the trainees ability to ride safely. It is conducted on-road and is aimed at pupils aged 9 years or over, in Y5 or above. It is available at a fee of £16.00 per pupil for six hours of training. Pupils are assessed during the final session and receive a certificate if they pass.

The course is also available as a volunteer led course. Warwickshire County Council provide training, equipment and support for schools wishing to run a volunteer course.
