The Fosse Way route is a unique rural route and covering a length of over 40 miles through Warwickshire, from the A5 boundary with Leicestershire to the southern boundary with Gloucestershire and passes through many settlements. The route consists of long straight sections, typical for a Roman Road, a number of bends of varying severity and is bisected by many crossroads junctions, some roundabouts and other T junctions.
Many locations on the route where there have been significant crashes, have already been improved, often by the use of signs or road markings. However, this new study has taken an holistic approach assessing the whole route for consistency whilst taking into account maintenance, speed cameras, signage and road markings.
All of the injury crashes in the last three years have been investigated to determine how they happened, and how we can try to reduce them in the future. Factors including location, time of day, speed, direction, weather conditions and number and type of vehicles involved and been investigated. This ‘in-depth’ analysis allows us to decide what new features can be installed along the route to address specific problem areas. |
All the measures put forward have been proven to be very effective at reducing crashes both nationally and locally. There are no proposals to change existing speed limits, as this would not address the causes of many of the crashes and would not comply with the County Council’s policy and criteria specified under the Speed Management Strategy. Gaining better compliance with the existing speed limit is considered more important.
As part of this review a new scheme called RouteAware will also be launched as a trial. As in many other parts of the Country RouteAware will highlight key crash cluster sites to road users using roadside poster signs and associated publicity materials.
County Councillors have shown their commitment to the proposals put forward. However, local communities have a valuable insight into the issues and problems in their area, and therefore we want to hear your views on these proposals.
The route covers three district areas of Rugby, Warwick and Stratford-on-Avon. You may only be interested in your local area or you may have comments about the whole route. We are keen to have as many views as possible to allow us to develop the best scheme possible for the Fosse Way.
