Major Accident Hazard Pipelines |
Pipelines are considered one of the safest modes for the conveyance of hazardous substances, and often safer than alternative methods such as road and rail. Within Warwickshire there are a significant number of such pipelines used for the distribution of gas and oil to homes and businesses within the region. These are known as 'Major Accident Hazard Pipelines'.
Despite being one of the safest methods of conveyance there are occasions however when pipeline failure or accidental release can result in loss of containment, and potentially cause a major accident hazard. |  |
To safeguard against such hazards, and fulfil duties detailed within the Pipeline Safety Regulations (1996), Warwickshire County Council produces in co-operation with pipeline operators, emergency plans to establish actions to minimise the consequence to the health and safety of the community in the unlikely event of an emergency involving a Major Accident Hazard Pipeline. |
