Emergency Planning and Advice
Major Accident Hazard Pipelines

Pipelines are considered one of the safest modes for the conveyance of hazardous substances, and often safer than alternative methods such as road and rail. Within Warwickshire there are a significant number of such pipelines used for the distribution of gas and oil to homes and businesses within the region. These are known as 'Major Accident Hazard Pipelines'.

Despite being one of the safest methods of conveyance there are occasions however when pipeline failure or accidental release can result in loss of containment, and potentially cause a major accident hazard.
Pipelines

To safeguard against such hazards, and fulfil duties detailed within the Pipeline Safety Regulations (1996), Warwickshire County Council produces in co-operation with pipeline operators, emergency plans to establish actions to minimise the consequence to the health and safety of the community in the unlikely event of an emergency involving a Major Accident Hazard Pipeline.

In the event of an incident at one of these sites or suspected danger from fumes or chemicals always remember:

Go indoors unless there is an obvious risk to the property, close doors and windows and shut down ventilation systems if it is safe to do so.

Stay indoors until you know more about the situation and the appropriate action you need to take to protect yourself further.
