Warwickshire Association of Youth Clubs

Warwickshire Association of Youth Clubs
Overview:

Warwickshire Association of Youth Clubs is an Association of 127 youth clubs working with over 6,000 young people and 800 youth workers in Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull. It works to improve the quality of life of young people between the ages of 11 and 25 by developing their physical, mental, and spiritual capacities so that they may grow to their full maturity as caring and responsible members of society. The Association works directly with young people, regardless of age, sex or ability.

If you run a youth club, or are setting up a new one, the Association can help you with programme ideas, policies and training (please see the Association’s website www.etc for a list of resources affiliated clubs can enjoy). They have a range of resources for hire, and offer support with arts, environmental projects and sports. They also run Momentum pre-learner driving courses.

All of the group’s activities can be accredited through the Youth Achievement Awards, and they also run the Millennium Volunteers project for the region.

Narrowboat trips:

WAYC has a narrowboat called ‘Dream Catcher’ which is available for groups of up to 10 young people to learn about crewing a narrow boat, gaining water based skills, as well as learning how to work together. It is available to all groups of young people either on a weekend or week basis. It has created some real benefits to young people's lives, supporting and developing them.

The narrow boat is available for use throughout the year and is supported by a qualified helmsman to ensure the safety of the young people involved. Groups will require support from youth workers throughout the time on the narrow boat.

All youth groups are welcome to book this excellent resource. The costs are kept considerably low, with helmsmen who volunteer their own services to support the project. This is done to ensure as many young people can use this facility as possible. If groups are unable to afford the costs, WAYC can even help groups apply for funding to pay for a trip.

Momentum pre-learner driving courses:
Momentum is a 30 hour road user education course. There are two strands to the course: 'First Gear' is for cars, 'On Two Wheels' is for motor-bikes. The courses are for young people aged 15-24 and cover three elements. The theory strand provides help in preparing for the compulsory theory test which has to be passed prior to undertaking the practical test, the Mechanics strand gives students a better understanding of what's under the bonnet or under the tank and the practice strand gives students the opportunity to try out their skills in a safe environment.

How to become involved - training & volunteering:
Volunteers

For young people aged 16 plus who wish to follow an accredited training route, WAYC offers an OCN level 2 Introductory Studies course. The aim of the course is to develop skills in working with people. The course comprises of three modules: the Self, the Team and the Project. Participants carry out a practical piece of work in their youth club, and to reflect on their experiences and learning. Warwickshire Community Education's training for part time youth workers can lead to the JNC locally qualified route for part time workers.

WAYC is also on the lookout for people who are willing to support WAYC’s work by volunteering their time and have supported over 1,000 young people to become involved in volunteering activities. If you are aged 16-24, you can become involved in the Millennium Volunteers project. If you are over 24, or would not like to commit for as many hours as MV, there are many other opportunities within the work that is carried out.
