CAR CLEAR
Since it's launch in June 2004, Warwickshire Car Clear has removed over 788 community safety risks and other abandoned vehicles from hot spot areas in Warwickshire and received over 3,522 calls from members of the public. The scheme, which involves Warwickshire Police, the 5 District / Borough Councils, Warwickshire County Council Contact Centre and a private sector partner, was cited as an example of best practice during the 2004 Charter Mark Assessment, and has currently achieved a 40% reduction in deliberate vehicle fires.
Impact and outcomes
To date, the Car Clear scheme has removed over 1,400 vehicles and has contributed to a 40% (28% since 2005) decrease in deliberate vehicle fires. This has supported a reduction in attendance by fire crews to vehicle fires, has improved the community by removing vehicles preventing young people injuring themselves and has reduced the impact of car fires on the environment. Communities and Local Government calculated the individual cost of a deliberate vehicle fire as £5,100 and therefore the total savings attained through Car Clear is £7.14 million.
