14/07/09 'Con' PCSO Targeting Farmers for Cash

Farmers have been receiving telephone calls from someone posing as a PCSO and asking for £150 donation to support a Youth Event. When challenged the caller put the phone down. It is unusual for Farmers to be targeted in this way and we strongly advise that all unsolicited telephone callers are challenged and their details thoroughly checked.

A Rugby business has reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming that the business had won an 'Excellence' award. The business queried the award after the caller asked for two payments of £59 for a 'nomination entry' fee. The business asked what the payments were for and the caller told them it was for a nomination pack. Needless to sat the business then put the phone down on the caller. Businesses are strongly advised to check and query all unsolicited invoices and associated telephone calls.

Businesses have reported receiving telephone calls from a trader proposing to do an article about their respective services and requesting an interview. When it became apparent to one business that the approach was really selling they declined to participate further, but then received a series of requests from the trader for payment of an invoice of £169.00 + VAT which they have declined to pay.

A local business has reported receiving invoices from a Lancashire based trader regarding sponsorship for a drugs awareness book. The business had never had any contact with the Lancashire trader previously, but the letters were titled 'OVERDUE STATEMENT!!!'.
