Charges For Community Care
Charges for Community Care Services from July 2008

Why do we have to charge?

We charge for services because more people need a service than we can afford from the money available.

We do not charge you for the full cost of providing the service, but the money helps us to continue to provide the present level of service. Most people say that they would rather pay than see services cut.

Who pays?

Before we charge you for Home Care or Day Care, we will assess whether you are financially able to pay. We do this in line with guidance issued by the Government and in line with our Charging Policy.

The assessment will make sure that we take account of any extra costs of disability so your income will not be reduced below a certain level (equivalent to the basic level of Income Support plus 40%). We will also give you advice on welfare benefits so you can increase your income by claiming all the benefits you may be entitled to.

As part of this assessment, we will take account of any savings you have, as follows:
Less than £13,500 - we will not take these into account.
Between £13,500 and £22,250 - we will apply a tariff income (as above)
      Above £22,250 - (as above)
  • We will not use these rules when charging for transport.
  • You will not pay if you receive money from the Independent Living Fund (ILF).
  • The minimum weekly charge is £1.
  • The maximum weekly charge is £366.09
