Wrapping Paper
Unfortunately, wrapping paper will not be accepted in your kerbside collection bin for recycling, this is because there are such a wide variety of different materials that make up wrapping paper and not all of them can be recycled. Why not try using string to secure your wrapping paper then your friends and family can reuse the wrapping paper again next year! Alternatively you could use a gift bag, which could also be reused!
Cards
Thanks to the public's support last year, 59 million cards were collected. The Woodland Trust is offering a guilt free way of disposing of Christmas Cards between 2-31 January 2010, which will also help raise funds through recycling credits to support the Woodland Trusts scheme - Tree For All - helping to give every child in the UK the chance to plant a tree.
All you have to do is take your cards to any WHSmith store, TKMaxx stores and M&S and place them in the special bins provided. Once received by the stores, the cards are collected and taken to regional distribution centres using existing transport links, where their weight is recorded. From here the cards are taken to paper mills where the paper is re-pulped, cleaned and turned into new paper products, typically these are tissue products and photocopy paper.
Christmas Tree Recycling
There are a number of ways to recycle your Christmas tree.
Mobile phones
Mobile phones can be recycled through the freepost envelope scheme available from your local library or by taking it to your nearest Household Recycling Centre. Whichever method you choose all proceeds will go to Guide Dogs for the Blind. Printer cartridges can also be recycled by using the same services.
Cans, glass and paper
We generate more rubbish at Christmas than at any other time of the year. Around 60% of this could be recycled either at kerbside, mini recycling centres and Household Recycling Centres. You can find out where your local bring bank is located using on the Recycle More website.
