 | The Collegiate church of St. Mary the Virgin, Astley |
 | | | This beautiful parish church first built in 1343 by Thomas Astley was dedicated to Saint Mary the Virgin and built as an addition to a medieval college of priests.
Designed in the form of a cross with a central tower and spire, the church shone a light from it's topmost point over the thick forests surrounding the area. This guiding light for travellers became known as 'The Lantern in Arden'. |
 | The church's purpose was to be a chantry for Thomas Astley. Here priests were to sing mass daily for both him and his family to aid their souls through purgatory.
Over the years the church has passed ownership through Sir Richard Chamberlayne to the Newdegate family who still own it today, and has undergone many alterations to create what now exists. | |

 | | After the dissolution of the monasteries the church fell into a state of disrepair and even the tower later collapsed damaging the roof and interior of the church.
It was rebuilt extensively during the 17th century by Sir Richard Chamberlayne and now includes an organ, memorial brass, 14th century oak choir stalls, a vault, a vestry and a bell ringing chamber. |
 | In 1927 Queen Mary, wife of King George V, visited the church and signed the register remarking how peaceful the settings of the church were.
The parents of Mary Anne Evans were married at Astley Church. Mary, otherwise known as George Eliot, mentions the church, referring to it as 'Knebley Church' in one of her famous books 'Mr Gilfil's Love Story'.
