The Project

The aim of the project was to provide a waste disposal facility that would be safe and convenient to use and operate. It would encourage as much recycling as posible with containers to receive a wide variety of items as well as having a recycle shop to raise funds for a local charites.

The contract included site clearance, the construction of site roads and retaining wall to provide an elevated parking and tipping area, and a portal frame recycling shed.

The value of the contract was £0.52m and it was awarded to Wrekin Construction. Work commenced in March 2003 and took 15 weeks to complete. Throughout the project, the Client, Design Staff and Contractor worked together in partnership.

As the works progressed, many recycled products were used, including the drainage pipes being of recycled plastic, and the lower layers of stone of the road construction being of crushed concrete.

Institution of Civil Engineers Awards

Burton Farm Recycling Centre was entered into the 2004 ICE Midlands award. A submission consisting of a report and several photographs of the project was the first stage of the assessment. This was followed by on the 19th May, by a presentation at "Thinktank" at Millenium Point, Birmingham. Where Burton Farm Recycling Centre beat off several major Civil Engineering Projects to win the Environmental Award.
