Dear Mr. Evans, I write you a line privately on a matter which has caused Lady Anne a great deal of trouble, because I know how she looks upon you as a friend of the family - & I think that you may be able to help me - in any case I hope that for the present you will keep my communication from every one's ears. I refer to the fact that has reached her that his Lordship has sold the Packington pictures. If she has been misinformed please tear up this letter & think no more about it. If it is correct I am very anxious to know whether you can help me privately to trace some of them with a view to repurchasing them (without my name appearing in the matter) I wd. especially refer to the portrait of Lady Anne's Father - for tho' she does not speak of it I am aware how deeply she feels that that one shd. be among strangers. I fear that my finances wd. not allow me to think of recovering more than that one - especially in view of this election which I have to face with all its expenses. If you can send me a line to say whether the then Ld. & Lady A & Mr. Dan as a child are gone & whether you think we can get them back or any of the one I specially referred to, will you write to me under cover of FW H. Walford Esqre

To be called for.
as I shd be sorry to raise Lady Anne's hopes by letting her guess that I had communicated with you on the subject - unless you gave good hopes of getting them back.
If you feel bound by any wishes of his Lordship as to keeping the matter quiet I should be quite willing that the picture shd remain shut up in your custody for the present.
I am yours very truly
