Quarries
Stone and clay have all been extracted from the area for hundreds of years, changing the landscape and employing many people.

Brick and Tile
Bricks, tiles and pottery have been made in this area since Roman times. In the nineteenth century, Nuneaton became a major producer of bricks.

Textiles
Textiles have played an important part in the history of Nuneaton and Bedworth since the seventeenth century. Firms such as Fielding and Johnson and Courtaulds were major employers. Some textile factories remain in the area.

Whether you made stockings, were a weaver or a home-worker finishing garments, we would love to speak to you.

Engineering
Engineering became a significant industry in Nuneaton and Bedworth after the Second World War. Companies such as Sterling Metals were an important part of the industrial landscape.

Can you tell us more about working in engineering in Nuneaton and Bedworth? If so, we want to hear from you.

What is Oral History?
Oral history is a way of recording people’s memories. It lets us hear personal histories that are often left out of history books. Most importantly, it lets future generations hear first-hand accounts of these experiences. If you would like to share your working memories, please get in touch!

About Us
Working Lives is an oral history project funded by Warwickshire County Council’s Nuneaton and Bedworth Area Committee’s Well Being fund. The project aims to collect, preserve and make accessible memories, images and information relating to people who worked in the brick and tile-making, quarrying, engineering and textile industries in Nuneaton and Bedworth.
