Waste and Recycling - Christmas
Shop Smart

Follow our top tips and you’ll be surprised by the amount of waste, and money you can save.

Start with your Christmas cards

One billion Christmas cards are sent each year in the UK, so make sure the ones you send are as green as they can be:
  • Look out for cards printed on recycled paper.
  • Buy cards from charities and help them raise money.
  • Send a charity e-card – you’ll save on paper and postage.
Wear a recycled party dress
  • Buy a fancy frock or two from a charity or second-hand clothes shop.
  • Make room in your wardrobe by giving last year’s outfit to charity.
  • Take unwanted clothes to a clothes bank at the recycling centre.

Food for thought

A whopping ten million turkeys will be sold in the UK, weighing 55,000 tonnes – roughly the same as 620,000 Father Christmas'! We also buy 175 million mince pies from supermarkets.

Top tips:
  • Order a fresh, free range turkey this year from a local farm or market.
  • Make your own mince pies or buy them loose.
  • Save on all the excess packaging.
  • Love Food Hate Waste has help and advice on getting portion sizes right and what to do with those left overs.
