Pride In Camp Hill
Background

Pride in Camp Hill is a partnership project between Warwickshire County Council (WCC), Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council (NBBC), Advantage West Midlands (AWM), the Prince’s Foundation (PF) and the residents and businesses of Camp Hill, together with the Learning and Skills Council, the Chamber of Commerce, the local Council for Voluntary Service and Primary Care Trust. The aim is to transform Camp Hill, through a series of physical and social/economic regeneration initiatives, along with service delivery improvements.

There are many issues of social exclusion in Camp Hill (poor quality housing and environment, low school/academic attainment, high unemployment and general multi-deprivation) – all of which combine to present real challenges for the community to overcome. To combat this, we have a major programme of activity, with three clear strands, known as the three legged stool:

a. Social and Economic Regeneration, through Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) initiatives (training, support for low achievers in schools, community safety, local employment training, environmental improvements, projects involving young people, Home Start), health improvement campaigns (smoking cessation, Family Community Care Centre).

b. Physical and Environmental Improvements, through building new housing, as well as improving existing housing. We will also provide additional and improved leisure, commercial, retail and industrial development and work to improve the overall physical environment of Camp Hill.

c. Improvements to the Delivery of Services, through a range of initiatives with providers of local services (bulky refuse collection, local housing repairs service) and a local base for contact and community involvement (Community Office).

This is an attempt to join up all the different policy streams – economic, social, physical regeneration and community development – to ensure effective economic development within the Camp Hill area and create a sustainable community into the future. We are currently using SRB funds to promote a number of initiatives to remove barriers to employment and improve basic skills levels. We have also worked with the Learning and Skills Council and the North Warwickshire and Hinckley College to develop construction industry and other training programmes, so that the local construction and other job opportunities will be available for local people.
