Coventry, Bond’s Hospital, Hill Street, 2002

Archaeological observation and small-scale excavation directed by Chris Jones and Cathy Coutts took place during the construction of an extension to Bond’s Hospital from September 2002 to January 2003 on behalf of Coventry Church (Municipal) Charities. The site lay in the north-western medieval suburb of Coventry adjacent to the city defences.

To the rear of the site the apparent butt end of a large ditch (5.5m wide x over 1.75m deep) running south-east to north-west and predating the mid/late 14th-century town wall and ditch was uncovered. This may have belonged to an earlier defensive arrangement for the town. Investigation of a boundary wall on the line of the 14th-century town wall revealed medieval masonry, 1.7m wide, within it, and excavation into the ditch to the north-west revealed the wall sitting on an early 16th-century or later, brick relieving arch set on timber piles.

Excavation on street frontage.

On the street frontage, in an area covering three medieval suburban plots, there was evidence for activity from the late 12th/13th century, including a limited amount of structural remains (including a stone wall and post holes) and a number of pits. The area was abandoned in the late 15th/early 16th century and turned over to cultivation. From the 16th century the site appears to have been re-occupied. A large timber-lined pit with a barrel sunk into one corner may have been a small cellar or possibly connected with an activity such as tanning or dyeing. The pit was probably 16th-century in date and had been backfilled with building demolition debris that may possibly have come from documented clearance work associated with the blocking of the Hill Street Gate in 1643. The site was redeveloped from the late 17th to early 18th century with buildings along the street frontage and yards and outbuildings extending behind.
