Race Equality

Definitions

Race
  • A classification of people with reference to colour, nationality, geography or national origin.
  • A grouping of people defined by society to distinguish different communities.
Racial Prejudice
  • Oppression of one person or a group of people on the basis of colour, race, nationality, ethnic or national origins.
  • Pre-judgement of a group belonging to a different racial group.
Racism
  • Oppression of one person or a group of people on the basis of colour, race, nationality, ethnic or national origins.
  • A difference of power exists between groups.
  • Can take the form of:
    a) personal racism e.g. verbal abuse, physical attack or;
    b) institutional racism i.e. practices and procedures, which deprive a racial group of equality of opportunity and access to society's resources e.g. poor housing.
    Racism can be overt or covert, intentional or unintentional.

  • People who are not white e.g. people of Asian, African, Caribbean origin.
  • Positive term used to unite people who face racism and discrimination.
  • Can be a problem because some groups e.g. Asian, object to it.
Mixed race or dual / mixed heritage
  • Child with parents from different racial groups.
Ethnic Minority

Group which share:
  • a common history
  • a cultural tradition
  • common ancestery / common geographical origin
  • a common language
  • a common literature
  • a common religion
  • are in the minority
Discrimination
  • Treating someone differently (generally unfavourably) because of a particular characteristic e.g. gender, racial origin, age, sexuality.
  • Direct racial discrimination is treating another less favourably because of their racial group.
  • Indirect discrimination is when a rule, condition or requirement is applied equally to all groups but results in an unbalanced negative effect on a particular group and cannot be justified as necessary for the job.
