Safety and Security Tips: student safety - going out

One of the best things about student life is the social scene: making new friends and enjoying nights out clubbing and partying. It is important however to recognise that after a drink or two, we might let our guard down. Remembering the following tips will help to ensure that you can enjoy your night out without becoming a victim of crime.

  • Avoid going to a pub, club or party alone.
  • Don't leave bags, coats or mobile phones unattended.
  • If you begin to feel drunk, dizzy or disorientated, seek help from a trusted friend or a member of the pub / club staff.
  • Do not drink and drive, and do not accept a lift from anyone who has been drinking.
  • Carry enough money for a taxi.
  • Don't go out alone late at night, try and meet people as close to where you live as you can. If not, then call a good cab company and get a taxi.
  • Don't flag mini-cabs down. Either call a cab company and ask for the driver's name so that you can check it before you get in or hail a black cab

Drink spiking
  • Watch your drinks being poured, never accept a drink from anyone you don’t trust and never leave your drink unattended.
  • Don’t take drinks from large open containers such as punch bowls.
  • Don’t share or exchange drinks.
  • If your drink looks or tastes odd get rid of it, but also remember that a spiked drink can appear quite normal.
  • If you begin to feel drunk after only a few drinks, seek help from a trusted friend or the management at the premises.
  • Never leave drinks unattended in pubs or clubs. When you go to the toilet, ask your friends to keep an eye on your drink.
  • Try to have your drinks in bottles & cover the top with your thumb when walking around.
  • Don't forget that men's drinks can get spiked too.

Mobile Phones
  • Only make essential calls in the street, and try to be aware of people around you.
  • Don’t leave your mobile phone on the table or seat when in a pub or nightclub - thieves will grab any opportunity.
  • Don’t leave your bag or coat unattended with your mobile in it - even in your vehicle.
  • Security mark your phone (including the battery) with a postcode and house number using an Ultra Violet (UV) pen (the cost of a UV pen is nothing compared to buying a new phone or paying for a thief's calls).
