How do I apply for a secondary school place?

Year 7 transfer from primary school

Living in Warwickshire?

Apply to Warwickshire Admissions Service for all secondary schools.
Warwickshire residents can apply on a Warwickshire application form for Warwickshire maintained schools (Community, Voluntary Aided and Foundation schools).
You can list schools in other authorities on your application form. The Admissions Service will send the details of your application to the relevant authority.

Only one offer will be made to any child living in Warwickshire. The Admissions Service will offer a place at the highest preference possible taking account of any over-subscriptions and the child’s priority within the criteria for entry to the school. We consider your preferences in the order you rank them. If it is not possible to offer the first preference your child is considered for the next preference and so on.

Your child is not given a higher priority if you name only one school. (see criteria for entry).

Living outside Warwickshire?

Apply to your home authority (where your child lives) for all secondary schools.

You can list maintained schools in other authorities on the application form of your home authority. That Admissions Service will send the details of your application to the relevant authority.

When is the closing date for applications?

The closing date for applications for children living in Warwickshire for September 2009 is 24 October 2008.

To register for tests for entry to grammar schools see below.

For children living in Warwickshire application forms will be acknowledged within 2 weeks of receipt. It is your responsibility to contact the Admissions Service if you do not receive an acknowledgment card. Please allow 4 working days for your application to arrive with the Admissions Service.

The closing date for application for children living outside Warwickshire is set by the home authority.

Applications made after the closing date will not be dealt with until after those made on time and it could affect your child's place in your preferred schools

How can I register my child for selection tests?

Entry to a grammar school is based on the child qualifying for a place through a selection or testing process. The level of ability needed to qualify for a place in Warwickshire is very high. You need to consider carefully whether your child will be appropriately placed in a grammar or selective school.

For information on how to register for the selection tests please download the leaflet here.

The Registration Form in larger size can be downloaded here.

How do I apply to transfer my child to another maintained school during a school year?

You must contact the schools direct to discuss placement during an academic year. If a school has a place available and only one applicant, a transfer should be straight forward. Do not assume that a place will be available automatically.

Remember: Please discuss your reasons for transfer with your child's current school. Wherever possible, you should try to resolve the problems at your child's current school. A move for a child can be very disruptive.

How do I apply to transfer my child to a Grammar school?

Vacancies will be offered to applicants who are deemed suitable for entry:

Years 7 to 9 inclusive (where the child is under 14 years 3 months)
Children moving into the priority circle and not previously tested who are applying for a place (once the new Year 7 have been admitted) will be tested according to the tests used for that year at entry and appropriate to the age of the child and assessed by comparison to the scores of those who qualified for places or were considered by the Committee of Reference.

Years 10 and above (or where the child is 14 years 3 months or more)
A child above 14 years 3 months is too old to test and so entry will be considered in comparison to the existing year group and the child’s performance in another school in the appropriate subject areas.

Transfer from a non-selective school in the Area
New applications for children who have already been tested and refused entry as non-qualifiers will be considered taking account of the existing test results and recent evidence about the child’s performance the current school as evidence of ability. It is normally only where the non-selective school is confirming that the child needs a higher level of work than is currently available that a transfer to a selective school will be arranged.

A retest is used only where there are grounds and evidence to doubt the validity of the original tests.

Where a child has not previously been tested and there is a recommendation from the non-selective school, a test will be arranged (where the child is under 14 years 3 months)

No waiting list is kept for year groups other than the incoming Year 7.

Offers are normally made no earlier than 6 school weeks before the child takes up the vacancy.
