Long Itchington Disused Rail Bridge

Long Itchington Disused Rail Bridge was constructed Circa 1893 for the London & Northwest Railway, which opened the Flecknoe to Marton Junction Branch in 1895.The railway was closed in 1985. The bridge carries Bascote Road over the Disused Railway between Long Itchington and Bascote. The bridge comprises two longitudinal girders, transverse girders and jack arches. The bridge is supported on blue brick abutments and wingwalls.

Damage to structure
Bridge viewed from carriageway
Warwickshire County Council carried out a strength assessment on the bridge in 2001. It was found that the bridge was only capable of supporting vehicles up to 7.5tonnes. The bridge is also in poor structural condition. After a consultation with local farmers, landowners and residents, it was decided that the bridge should be replaced in order to maintain a full strength carriageway that would meet the needs of road users.

The old bridge was demolished and replaced with a new corrugated steel underpass suitable for pedestrians, equestrians and cyclists to use. This is strong enough to maintain a full strength carriageway, no weight restriction will need to be applied to Bascote Road.
The bridge replacement work was carried out in early 2005
