 | Mancetter has merged into the town of Atherstone, and now forms a single urban area. The village is built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the River Anker, and is on the site of a former Roman settlement called Manduessedum, meaning the place of chariots.
Some archaeologists believe that this was home to the fourteenth Roman legion to whom which Queen Boadicea (Boudicca) met her fate in AD60 outside the fort in the Anker Valley.
Previous excavations by Atherstone Archaeological and Historical Society were abandoned on order of English Heritage when skeletons believed to be Saxon were revealed. Both of the sites are now classified as Ancient Monuments, and development of the site is not permitted.
The Church of St.Peter and the Almshouses are of interest. The manor house dates from 1330 and has been altered over the centuries but is still an excellent example of a timber-framed building.
Adjoining the UK's largest garden centre, Dobbies Plantasia features an interactive visitor centre that reveals the mystery of plants, as well as 6 outdoor mazes, lakeside walks and treetop trails.
Hartshill Hayes Country Park lies south of the town and offers 137 acres of open hilltop, meadow and woodland overlooking the Anker Valley/
