Right to Roam - what's happening in Warwickshire

Although the 'Right to Roam' has come into effect in Warwickshire, less than 1% of land is affected. The majority of this land is the registered Common land within the County and much of this already had informal public access.

For more information about where you, as a member of the public, can go at the moment visit the national Countryside Access website. You will be able to check online where you can go. Access land may be marked with the Open Access Symbol.

You do not have the right to roam over farmland and other countryside unless it has specifically been included in the Access Maps. When walking in most of Warwickshire's countryside you must keep to the public rights of way.

Background
The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 introduced a new type of access to the countryside, popularly known as the "Right to Roam".

The new access rights apply only to certain types of land.
The affected land includes;

mountain
moorland
heath
downland
registered common land
land which has been specifically dedicated by a landowner

The draft maps were published in 2003 showing areas identified by the Countryside Agency, and the provisional maps were published on 20 May 2004. The conclusive maps were published on 1 July 2005, with the new rights finally taking effect in October 2005.
