What is Biodiversity? | |
A meadow full of wildflowers; a bluebell wood alive with bird songs; a hedgerow full of blossom; a heavily scented buddleia awash with butterflies; a pond full of...... the list goes on. These are some examples of biodiversity (the variety of life) that can be encountered in our area. There are three distinct levels of biodiversity: | ![]() |
Human life itself depends on the networks between different living creatures and their habitats. Biodiversity gives us the essentials of life – water, oxygen, food, clothing, health and relaxation. We could not survive without it and the quality of our lives is greatly enriched by wildlife. Yet human activity is having a devastating impact on biodiversity across the world. In Britain urban development, intensive farming, transport, pollution and disturbance has lead to huge losses of certain habitats and species. Biodiversity Action Plans At the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, over 150 countries pledged to conserve their dwindling biodiversity. Britain has already published a UK Biodiversity Action Plan. It is now encouraging local people and local organisations to form partnerships that can produce and deliver Local Biodiversity Action Plans (LBAPs). | |
