Frequently Asked Questions
General Fire Safety Advice
What can I do to protect my family and home from fire?
You should make a fire action plan before you have a fire, which will include planing the best escape route, fitting smoke detectors, keeping doors closed at night and carrying out a safety check before going to bed.
Make your plan - Get out alive
What type of smoke detector should I fit in my home and where?
For a minimum level of protection in two storey houses, the installation of an optical smoke detector in the ground floor hallway and an ionisation smoke alarm on the first floor landing should be considered.
Wake up - Get a smoke alarm
How do I know if my furniture complies with fire safety regulations?
All furniture sold to the general public
since 1988 must comply with the
Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988
.
Very old furniture made before 1950 do not however need to comply.
If you rent or let a furnished property the furniture must comply with the above regulations.
My neighbour keeps burning rubbish in his garden can I stop him from doing so as it’s causing a nuisance?
There is no legislation that prevents people burning refuse on their own property. Some local authorities however have passed by-laws that apply to burning refuse in certain locations. If smoke from a bonfire is a persistent nuisance you should contact the environmental health department of your local authority who may be able to help. If fire causes damage to your property and it was pointed out to the neighbour that this may be the out come of his actions or he is recluse this may be classed as arson and legal proceedings could be taken.
