Calendars of Prisoners Database
Searching

The database is searchable in two different ways, firstly by “views” or "indexes" and secondly by a free text search box. The views enable you to look for information about individuals arranged by the type of crime committed, by the location of the crime, by the victim’s residence, and by people’s names. The free text search is useful if you want to find a specific individual.

To perform a free text search click on 'search' below and enter the known information accordingly.

Tips on searching
Using a wildcard allows you to find words containing part of your search string, e.g Hil* will find all those names containing Hil: Hill, Hillman, Hilton etc.

Use a ? to indicate that just one character is missing or the * to indicate multiple missing characters.

Single character wildcard search
Examples
mac? Finds all four letter surnames which match the pattern (such as Mack or Mace)
b???k Finds all five letter surnames which start with B and end with k (such as Brook, Black or Blick)

Multiple character wildcard search
Examples
b*y Finds all crimes which start with b and end with y (such as bastardy, bigamy or burglary)
jac* Finds all surnames which start with Jac (such as Jacob, Jacobs or Jacox)
*ed Finds all surnames which end in ed (such as Need, Reed or Pendred)
*re* Finds all surnames which have ‘re’ anywhere in the surname (such as Breedon, Greenwood or Moore)
