Arts Culture and Heritage
Mediabox A New £6 million fund supported by DfES to give lifelong skills in media production to13-19 year olds and boost their social and personal development. Grants from £1,000 to £80,000 are available to create and distribute high quality media projects in film, radio, television, print, photography and interactive media. Projects must be completed and distributed by March 2008.

GrantScape Windmill and Watermill Challenge - Applications are invited from from community groups wanting to restore and/or repair traditional windmills and watermills and/or to enhance public access to them. Funding eligibility includes work to support the mills' generation and use of hydro or wind power. All grants will be between £50,000 and £100,000. Projects must be compliant under the rules of the Landfill Communities Fund, and be located within ten miles of a licensed landfill site. The application deadline was 7 September 2007. First Light funding schemes for young film makers -
The Pilot Award provides up to £4,000 to make one film of up to 5 minutes long.
Studio Award up to £20,000 to make films up 10 minutes long.

National Foundation for Youth Music
Grants for between £5,000 and £30,000 are available to non-profit making organisations to work with children and young people, up to the age of 18, over a period of 6 to 24 months.
Community groups, young people's music organisations, groups of schools, youth clubs and arts centres (although local education authorities are not eligible to apply, they may want to organise groups of schools in their area to apply as a consortium) can apply. Grants for War Memorials - English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation in association with Friends of War Memorials make grants worth up to 50% of the eligible costs or £10,000, for the repair and conservation of free~standing war memorials. Eligible project costs include: urgent and necessary repairs; work to improve the legibility of eroded inscriptions; cleaning or reinstatement of lost elements. Applications are dealt with in six monthly batches each year with closing dates of 30 April and 31 October.

Abolition of slavery - Awards for All has recently funded a new website - Abolition 200. It highlights funding opportunities; a searchable database of local events, a special area for teachers and schools and feature stories. Grants worth up to £10,000 are available to groups to commemorate the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade in the UK. For more information visit www.abolition200.org.uk.

Warwickshire Against Crime is a charitable trust funded by donations from local businesses and individuals, which are redistributed as grants to local communities.
Communities groups can apply for grants worth up to £5,000 to help prevent crime or promote public safety.
Trustees meet four times a year in March, June, September and December to consider applications. Online application forms are available via the trust’s website at

Nationwide Foundation - Small Grants Programme this offers one-off grants of up to £1,500 to charities with an income of under £250,000, for work which supports people affected by Domestic Violence. Preference is given to work focusing on: volunteers; BME groups; preventative measures e.g. research programmes, courses, workshops, seminars; young people 0 - 18 years; mediation; peer support; local projects; collaborative projects and advocacy.- advocacy.
Organisations must be a registered charity with an income not exceeding £250,000 in the last financial year.
Application forms are only accessible from their website at www.nationwidefoundaton.org.uk There are no deadlines and payments are made to successful applicants four times a year

Family Learning programme - the Big Lottery Fund launched their Family Learning programme on 19 September 2006. The scheme will fund projects where children and parents (includig those acting in a parenting role) can learn together to achieve joint learning outcomes. Grants will be for £10,000 - £500,000 for between one and five years. Further details are available from www.biglotteryfund.org.uk

Sidney Perry Foundation - support for students under 35. Up to a maximum of £700 – average grant is £500 - for students starting a course in higher education. Applications should be made by the November of the year before the start of the academic year for which funding is sought. In exceptional circumstances, late applications may be considered, with a final cut-off of 31 January.

Tools for Schools – provide low-cost computers to schools, and other educational establishments at nominal cost. Pentium 3 computers are available from £95. All state schools (nursery, primary, secondary and special); further, higher and community colleges; registered charities and voluntary organisations directly involved in education are eligible. Applications can be made at any time and on receipt the organisation will be added to a waiting list and informed when computers become available (the average waiting time is approximately two weeks). National Sports Foundation - As announced in the March 2006 budget, the National Sports Foundation (NSF) was launched to increase sponsorship for grass roots sport. Applicants who have identified £50,001 or more in sponsorship from a commercial or private investor can apply for match funding from the NSF on a £ for £ basis. Applications can be for capital and revenue and for projects lasting up to two years. The key priorities are Women into Sport, 2012 Kids and Fit for Sport – (improving the physical and human infrastructure). Sports Relief Grants for Warwickshire
The Heart of England Community Foundation is distributing funds in Warwickshire on behalf of Sports Relief. The money will be awarded to local projects that use sport and exercise to tackle social exclusion and strengthen communities. Groups can apply for grants between £250 and £5,000 under the following themes:
* Increase access to sport and exercise
* Helping people experiencing difficulties in their lives regain their confidence and self esteem.
* Encouraging people to take part in sporting activities that bring communities together.
Maximum grant £2,000, minimum £250. In exceptional cases grants may be made up to £5,000.

The Dickie Bird Foundation
grants for individuals or groups to help them succeed in sport. The Foundation can help financially disadvantaged young people under 18 years of age to participate, to the best of their ability, in the sport of their choice irrespective of their social circumstances, culture or ethnicity and improve their chances both inside and outside sport. Grants are usually worth from £500 to £1,000.

Local Network Fund - For work with children and young people. Grants of up to £7,000 for community and self help projects that help tackle poverty and disadvantage affecting young people from 0-19 years of age. Projects should fit within one of the four following themes: Isolation and Access; Aspirations and Experience; Economic Disadvantage and Chilren's Voices. The Ragdoll Foundation - Registered charities can apply for grants worth from £500 upwards to support imaginative and innovative projects which promote the development of children through the arts – particularly those which demonstrate and understanding of how to listen to children and allow them to be heard. Pojects can also take place at an international level. The last submission deadline was 28 August 2007. Applicants should first submit an ‘inspirational paragraph’ (one page maximum) and complete the contact form available on their website at www.ragdollfoundation.org.uk

Playground Partnerships Awards – Primary and special schools within the UK are invited to apply for financial support to turn their ideas for improving their playgrounds into a reality. The awards offer the opportunity for high quality teaching and learning across the curriculum and encourage:
- A pupil-led approach with the children taking on specific roles such as designer, surveyor, budget manager etc.
- Involvement of the whole school.
- Input from the wider community.
- Inclusion of pupils with special educational needs.
Support is available for projects worth £1,000, £2,000, £5,000 or £10,000, and schools that have already embarked on playground improvements may still apply.

Here to Help Awards - Save the Children and British Gas offer up to £1,000 for projects by young people that help make their communities healthier, more engaging, safer places to be. Grants for young people from vcashpoint
A total of £1 million will be distributed through four funding rounds via grants of up to £2,500 to young people aged 16-25 who want to make a difference to their communities.
The grant must be used to design and implement exciting and creative voluntary projects that benefit the applicant’s community. Projects should last no longer than six months following payment of the grant, and must involve young people in their organisation, planning and implementation.
(Purchase of equipment is eligible only where absolutely necessary and grants cannot be used to fund: the promotion of political or religious activities; existing staff costs; or volunteering outside of England)

Barrow Cadbury Trust – to help young people make the transition to adulthood and improve their life changes. Grants worth between £10,000 and £15,000 per year for running costs and core costs for projects focusing on Young Adults and Criminal Justice; Inclusive Communities; and Global Exchange. The Camelot Foundation - provides support for organisations that help young people who have slipped out of the mainstream of society, or are in danger of doing so. Grants worth from £10,000 and £60,000 can fund equipment, training for project users, volunteer expenses (eg travel), running costs and requests that have an effect on the users' quality of life. Programmes include 'Transforming Lives' programme and '4front Awards' (see below)

Big Lottery Fund - Playful Ideas - this programme will support projects that focus on innovation and new ways of providing for children's play and will make awards up to £250,000. The Big Boost Fund
UnLtd, the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs launched this £10 million funding programme inNovember 2005.The Big Lottery Fund appointed UnLtd as award partner to deliver ’The Big Boost’ under the Grants to individuals strand of the Young People's Fund. Grants worth £250 and £5,000 are helping individuals and small groups of young people from 11 to 25 years old, deliver local projects. They encourage social entrepreneurship among young people from all backgrounds and help individuals develop projects which make a lasting difference to them and to their communities. The Norton Foundation
Grants for individuals
The committee meets every month to consider applications made on behalf of needy individuals or families. Applications must be made by a sponsoring organisation such as social services, probation, schools, voluntary relief organisations or the CAB. Up to £500 available for a variety of needs eg. transport, training, education, holidays, clothing etc.


Grants for organisations

South Warwickshire 'YouthBank'- grants for young people's projects.
Young people's groups with members from 12 - 25 yrs living in Stratford or Warwick districts could be eligible for grants worth up to £3,000 from the 'YouthBank'.
Set up by Warwick & Stratford Youth Forums and supported by WCC Community Education, grants can help projects with a community or environmental benefit in areas that experience high levels of ‘nuisance’ youth, lack facilities or experience disadvantage. Environment

The Local Food Programme
. Grants from £2,000 up to £500,000 are available for not-for-profit groups and organisations in England delivering such projects as growing, processing, marketing and distributing local food; composting and raising awareness of the benefits of such activities.
The programme is managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT) and is aimed at making locally grown food accessible and affordable to local communities. Between £2,000 to £10,000 is available for small grants and between £10,001 to £300,000 is available for main grants – these can be applied for at any time. Re-launch of Low Carbon Buildings programme for householders. Following Budget announcement to increase available funding by 50% and reshape the scheme. Grants will be allocated on a first come, first served basis as long as funds last. There will be a £2,500 grant cap per household. Planning permission must be in place before applications are made.
Solar photovoltaics - maximum of £2,000 per kW of installed capacity, subject to an overall maximum of £2,500 or 50% of the relevant eligible costs, whichever is the lower.
Wind turbines - maximum of £1,000 per kW of installed capacity, subject to an overall maximum of £2,500 or 30% of the relevant eligible costs, whichever is the lower.
Small hydro - maximum of £1,000 per kW of installed capacity, subject to an overall maximum of £2,500 or 30% of the relevant eligible costs, whichever is the lower.
Solar thermal hot water - overall maximum of £400 or 30% of the relevant eligible costs, whichever is the lower.
Ground/water/air source heat pumps - overall maximum of £1,200 or 30% of the relevant eligible costs, whichever is the lower.
Automated wood pellet fed room heaters/stoves - overall maximum of £600 or 20% of the relevant eligible costs, whichever is the lower.
Wood fuelled boiler systems - overall maximum of £1,500 or 30% of the relevant eligible costs, whichever is the lower.

Comic Relief Young Carers expressions of interest are currently being invited for voluntary sector projects supporting carers under 21. Grants up to £70,000 over three years are avaialble. They are pparticularly interested in hard to reach young carers such as those from ethnic minority or refugee communities or those who are hidden due to stigma attached to the person they are caring for. They are also offering training events for those interested in applying. The deadline for submitting the expression of interest was 14 December 2007. Further information can be found at

Big Lottery Fund – People’s Millions 2008 Competition
The BIG Lottery Fund are looking to build on the success of previous years, by continuing The People’s Millions competition in 2008. They have already funded 229 projects across the UK, and hope to fund 90 new projects in 2008. There will be four head-to-head competitions in each of the 18 ITV regions resulting in 72 winning projects. In addition, there will be another 18 bonus awards for the runners-up who score highest in each region.
Grants of up to £50,000 will be provided for projects that transform local environments and offer opportunities or facilities for people to take part and enjoy their local area. This will include initiatives focusing on buildings, amenities, public and green spaces and natural habitats. Voluntary and community groups, social enterprises, local authorities, schools and health organisations are invited to apply. The deadline for entries is 12 noon on 15th May 2008.

Carbon Footprint Fund and Environment Action Fund - Building Sustainable Neighbourhoods have recently announced two new funding opportunities for local organisations in Nuneaton and Bedworth. The Carbon Footprint Fund will support groups who own or lease a community building to become more energy efficient or to adopt renewable energy sources. Community and voluntary groups delivering projects that promote healthier or more sustainable lifestyles or who wish to improve open spaces may find support through the Environment Action Fund. COMMA Fund - the Community Aggregates Fund can make grants up to £20,000 (although many will be below £10,000) for the improvement and development of community buildings, parks and play areas, the conservation of biodiversity and the restoration of historic monuments. The fund is designed to mitigate against the effects of aggregate extraction and therefore projects must be located within 10k of a current or former quarry. The deadline for applications was 1 September 2007. The fund is administered by ACRE and further information is available from their website at http://www.acre.org.uk/COMMA.htm .

Natural England Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund Grant Scheme 2007/8 -for projects that reduce the effects of aggregate extraction on local communities and the natural environment. Individuals, companies or organisations can apply for grants of up to £350,000, up to 75% of total eligible costs, for projects which involve and will deliver clearly defined benefits in terms of one or more of the following general themes:
- Landscape and Nature Conservation (including both biodiversity and geodiversity).
- Access and Informal Recreation.
- Communities.
- Education and Understanding.
- Evidence Gathering.

WRG Communities Challenge - Waste Recycling Environmental Limited (WREN) £1 million challenge fund building on the success of their Village Hall and Community Centre Challenge. The money will help breathe new life into tired or rundown facilities or provide much needed new amenities. The scope of the fund has been extended to support the best community regeneration projects ranging from children’s play areas, skate parks and community buildings, to nature reserves, sensory gardens and public parks.
Not-for-profit groups with constitutions, such as charities, community groups or local authorities can apply for grants ranging from £75,000 to £250,000 for capital projects that will make a real difference to their community.
Communities should be within ten miles of a WRG landfill site or transfer station.
WREN is working with local authorities for this Challenge, who will help to promote the Challenge and participate in judging the entries in each of WRG’s operating areas. The deadline for Stage 1 applications was 30 March 2007. Visit www.wren.org.uk for details.

SITA Trust Enhancing Communities Small Grants Scheme - fast-track access to grants worth up to £10,000 for community improvement projects.
Not for profit organisations, community groups, parish councils, Local Authorities and charities can apply for support for projects that provide: Community facilities; Historic Buildings (Grade I listed places of worship and historic monuments with an appropriate designation) and Sport and recreation facilities. Because the funding comes through the Landfill Communities fund projects must take place within a ten-mile radius of an active landfill site owned by SITA UK; be operated on a not-for-profit basis; and be open to the public. Waterways Trust Small Grants Scheme - for waterway~related projects that provide: lasting environmental enhancement; public enjoyment and awareness; educational opportunities; and benefits to young people. Organisations, community groups or schools including private companies, charities and local authorities can apply for grants worth up to £1,000. BTCV Chestnut Fund – for groups with less than £1,000 existing funding that carry out practical conservation. The Fund is an independent grant-giving body administered through BTCV. Start-up Grants (up to £100) to help with membership, administration costs and insurance in the first year of membership. Support Grants (up to £300) are available to cover the costs of training and tools for any groups associated to BTCV . Groups must be part of the BTCV Community Network to qualify. WRAP Behavioural Change Local fund for Communities - £500,000 government funding to provide a progamme of advice, information and grants, to support community projects aimed at changing behaviour and increasing participation in recycling and composting services. Grants worth up to £50,000 – although most will be much smaller – will be available to support projects promoting community sector or local authority services through, for example, leaflets, newsletters, posters, events or more innovative communications. Web~based resources and local events kits will also be available. Community groups and not-for-profit organisations are eligible for support. Landfill Tax Credit Scheme - Biffaward
The Biffaward Small Grants Scheme makes it easier for groups to access funding for community facilities. Priority will be given to projects which aim to improve an amenity that lies within 10 miles of a Biffa operation. Projects should foster vibrant communities by improving the environmental, economic or social circumstances of a community.
These might include:
Wildlife & habitat conservation and creation e.g. pond construction, wildflower planting or woodland management
Improving opportunities for informal education & lifelong learning e.g. purchasing equipment for a community led internet cafe or a community facility
Access to sport, culture or recreation e.g. purchase of play equipment or sport equipment, village green improvements, disabled access to a community facility.
The Small Grants Scheme is open to any not-for-profit community led organisation with its own bank account. Groups can apply for between £250-£5,000 but the total project cost must be no more than £10,000. Applications can be made at any time and will be considered at the most appropriate six weekly panel meeting – decisions take a minimum of two months.

Faith Communities Capacity Building Fund - Organisations were invited to apply for small grants (up to £5,000) or large grants (over £5,000 and up to £30,000). This Home Office funding aims to help faith and inter faith organisations strengthen their capacity and enhance social cohesion. It will also support inter faith activities which bring together people from different faith groups to talk, network and learn from one another. Applications are encouraged from local groups working in the most disadvantaged areas and in areas with the largest and most diverse minority ethnic populations. Commission for Racial Equality(CRE) Getting Results (Racial Equality) 2007/8 funding priorities were: inter-community conflict prevention and resolution and support for victims of racial discrimination and harassment, including casework. In the past grants have been awarded to racial equality councils (RECs), complainant aid centres, and other voluntary and community organisations. However, any organisation is eligible for funding, as long as it agrees to the compact on relations between the CRE and organisations receiving Section 44 grants and the CRE's code of practice for Section 44 funding. (However CRE do not normally fund statutory bodies).
The maximum an organisation can apply for under each outcome is £33,500 – with a total of £100,000 in any one application. Funding wass available for a twelve-month period, commencing 1 April 2007.

Kings Fund / GSK UK Impact Awards - up to 10 winners receive an award of £20,000 for excellence in their existing work (overall winner receives a further £10,000). In addition up to ten highly commended projects will receive awards of £5,000. Voluntary organisations with an income of less than £1m that make an impact on the health of their community can apply. Help the Hospices Grants, for voluntary carers of the terminally ill - £25,000 to £50,000 for organisations for innovative projects focusing on a new service,or a discrete extension of an existing service, with an impact at local level. Projects that aim to support under-represented carers will be looked at favourably. These may include young carers, men, carers from black and minority ethnic communities, working carers, people whose caring experience is short-term, and people who do not identify themselves as a 'carer'.

Easy to access European fund providing grants of up to £10,000 for community organisation projects that aim to improve the employability of people not yet in work. Projects can focus directly on training but can range from helping build confidence and self esteem to job related training. The final application deadline has now passed.

UK Villages Community Kitty – Second 2007 Round Open to Applications - applications are invited from community groups, societies, clubs and individuals. Applicants must be registered on UK Villages web site and funds must go towards a clearly identifiable project that will benefit the community. Funding of between £50 and £300 is available and projects are judged on relevance, uniqueness, regionality and other related fund raising. Visit www.ukvillages.co.uk for more information.

Win up to £1,000 for your community The Commission for Rural Communities (CRC) Community Empowerment Awards 2007 scheme rewards and shares best practice across the town and parish council sector. There are categories: Young People; Older People; Housing; and Gypsies Travellers and Migrant Workers. Work should be carried out on a day-to-day basis helping to engage and empower your local community. The work does not have to be ground breaking to be best practice, as long as it works in your community. Regional winners will receive a contribution of £250 and go forward to the national award and the chance of winning £750. Closing date for nominations is 6 July 2007. People's Millions - grants of up to £80,000 plus VAT to assist local communities to transform the environment where they live. This can include green spaces, community buildings and other amenities. Projects can also help people access and enjoy their local environment. The scheme from the Big Lottery Fund will be open to applications from 13 March 2007, with a deadline of 17 May 2007. Applications will be assessed by the Big Lottery Fund and then shortlisted projects will go forward to a public vote in November. For further information see www.peoplesmillions.org.uk

Warwick District Council small grants for community based projects that take place within Warwick District. Projects must meet at least two of the Council's key strategic objectives and priorities which include involving the public in Council business, improving the public environment, tackling anti-social behaviour, promoting healthier lifestyles, promoting the vitality of town centres, cultural activities, providing sports and physical activity and the promotion of equality. Grants of 50% of the project costs, up to a maximum of £500, are available but applicants had to submit their application by 31 January 2007 were advised to read the full guidance notes before completing anapplication form . Age Concern England Charities, voluntary organisations and not-for profit groups that provide services or activities that benefit older people can apply for grants. Under two programmes:
  • Bright Ideas - up to £2,000 for groups whose annual turnover is less than £200,000 - for new or expanding local projects providing services for the direct benefit of older people. Examples include new activities at day centres and lunch clubs, home repair and maintenance services, respite for carers, health and fitness programmes and visiting schemes.
  • Barclays Programme - Any club for older people may apply for a one-off grant of up to £150 for new equipment or activities. Such things as tea urns, crockery, games and bingo equipment and craft materials can be bought with one of these grants.

    James Kenning Public Purposes Charity - has some funding to donate to small charities or organisations within the Borough of Rugby. Projects must be for the benefit of the public as opposed to individuals or organisations not open to the public. You can apply for a multi-media internet-ready PC and a contribution towards a year's broadband internet access through BT Total Broadband. Previous award winners are eligible for the e-ffective Connection award which offers an enhanced package of IT equipment, such as laptops, printers, scanners and digital cameras.     Strategic Grants and Small Grants strands of the Big Lottery Fund International programme - aid to UK organisations for international projects that tackle the causes of deprivation and bring about a long-term difference. There are three strands: grants worth £50,000 up to £500,000 under the International Communities Programme; the International Strategic Programme will award a total of five to ten grants of between £1 million and £5 million, and the International Small Grants Programme will offer grants of up to £10,000.     Tesco Community Awards - grants worth from £1,500 - £5,000 for non-profit making groups.
    For local projects whose core work supports the welfare of children, elderly people and people with disabilities. Available in areas where Tesco has stores. The Trust intends to give grants of up to £360,000 each year.
