Moving on from primary to secondary school
|
Moving on from primary to secondary school is a new and exciting time in your life and there will be 101 things to think about. How to get to your new school safely may not have even crossed your mind, but it's never too soon to begin thinking about it.
Planning a safe route to school
When you go to your new school, decide how you're going to get there before term begins. Work out your route, check how long it takes and find out who you can travel with.

Walking Safely
Don't be distracted by friends, mobile phones or games. Pay attention to the traffic, find a safe place to cross the road and wear something bright on dark mornings and evenings.
Cycling Safely
Keep your bike fully maintained and wear proper gear. Use cycle paths if provided and, watch out for other vehicles - you may see them, but they may not see you.
Travelling by bus
Check timetables and the nearest stops. Get a travel pass or have the right money. Wear a seatbelt if provided and consider other people when waiting at the bus stop. If you need to leave the coach in an emergency - keep your cool and listen for instructions.
Travelling by car
Wear your seatbelt at all times - it's the LAW - and don't distract the driver. Check for other road users before you open the car door and always get out on the kerbside of the car. |
