Race Equality - School Race Equality Policy
Guidance and documentation

Secondary school age girls in class

Introduction

This policy has been written to meet the school's statutory duty under the Race Relations Amendment Act 2000 (RRAA) and reflects the general and specific duties on schools as detailed in the Race Relations Act 1976 and as amended by the Race Relations Amendment Act 2000.

General and specific duties are required as follows:
  • eliminate racial discrimination
  • promote equality of opportunity
  • promote good relations between people of different racial groups

The specific duty requires us to:
  • prepare a written policy on racial equality;
  • assess the impact of our policies, including this policy, on pupils, staff and parents, of different racial groups, including, in particular, the impact on attainment levels of these pupils;
  • monitor the operation of our policies through the impact they have on such pupils, staff and parents, with particular reference to their impact on the attainment levels of such pupils.

Designing a Race Equality Policy

The School Guidance Pack is designed to assist schools in creating a Race Equality Policy and Action Plan which will reflect their unique requirements. Examples of current Race Equality School Policies can be found here.

Combatting Racial Incidents

The Guidelines for Schools provides a practical guide to creating a secure climate for achievements for every pupil in every school in Warwickshire. Under the RRAA all schools, regardless of whether they have Black or Minority Ethnic (BME) pupils, staff or governors now have to procatively tackle racial discrimination and promote equality of opportunity.

OfSTED, when inspecting schools, can also ask for evidence to show how schools react to racial incidents and therefore provide a safe learning environment.

For further advice and guidance please contact the Race, Equality and Diversity Officer (Schools) on 01926 742358.

What should schools be reporting?
  • All incidents should be reported to the L.A. An electronic version of the Racial and Religious Incident Form can be used, or you can download a hard copy. The data collected will serve to inform future county and school policy, planning and support.
  • An annual summary of all incidents must be sent to the L.A. at the end of each academic year.

Access to the relevant forms can be found opposite.
