My dear Mr. Evans,
I have taken counsel with two good men on the subject of a settlement (- my Brother-in-law & Mr. Horton -); and as their opinions incline in opposite directions I can only put myself in your hands, and will do exactly as you think best.
My Brother-in-law, with mercantile experiences, rather advises a settlement; and I will enclose his letter, that you may see exactly what he says. Horton, with legal experiences, is rather strong against a Settlement. His objections are chiefly of the kind which you also referred to; viz. the bonds which it imposes, and the difficulties which it sometimes throws in the way of your making the best of what you have. But I should like to do exactly as you advise; and I hope you will say frankly what you think will be the best, because I am sure that you will think only for our good.
I enclose a List of my present Investments, to help you in deciding. I have, besides, a small house and about seven acres of land at Winstock; but as my Step-Mother & half-sister have the use of it for their lives it does not bring me in any cash.
Horton advises a Will made directly after marriage. It might be got ready before, and signed immediately after. I fear I was wrong about the portion which a widow would naturally take; but a Will would rectify all that.
With kind regards, believe me, Yours most faithfully
W. Griffiths
